Before you board

What makes a great Thanksgiving book?

  • A table worth sitting at. The best Thanksgiving novels put a family in one room and let the pressure build: old grudges, new partners, one more glass of wine.
  • Food that does the talking. In a good food memoir a recipe is never just a recipe. It is a grandmother, a homesick year or a way of saying sorry.
  • Room for the whole story. A thoughtful Thanksgiving shelf makes space for Wampanoag and other Native voices, not only the school-play version of 1621.
  • The right length for the weekend. Some books last the whole trip home. Others fit between the turkey and the pie. We have both.
Our method

How we chose these books

Every book on this page is one we have reviewed on The Bookish Elf, and every title links to the full review. We looked for three things: books where Thanksgiving or a family gathering is at the heart of the story, books about food, home and gratitude that suit the long weekend, and books by Native authors that tell the history and the present from their side.

We read across ages and moods, from picture books to thousand-page family sagas, and we keep the shelves fresh: new reviews join the shelves as they are published, and this page is updated through November.

Thanksgiving trivia

Truth or turkey?

Eight things people say about Thanksgiving. Four are true and four are turkey. Guess, then the ticket inspector checks your answer.

No. 1

A magazine editor, the author of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, campaigned for 17 years to make Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Truth. Sarah Josepha Hale wrote to presidents from 1846 until Lincoln agreed in 1863. Read Thank You, Sarah on our kids’ shelf.
No. 2

Turkey is named on the menu in the only eyewitness account of the 1621 harvest feast.

Turkey. Edward Winslow’s letter mentions “fowl” and five deer that Massasoit’s men brought. Wild turkey is possible, but it is never named.
No. 3

About 90 Wampanoag men came to the 1621 gathering, far more than the English hosts.

Truth. Winslow says Massasoit came “with some ninety men”. Around 50 English colonists had survived the first winter.
No. 4

Abraham Lincoln was the first president to proclaim a day of thanksgiving.

Turkey. George Washington proclaimed one for 26 November 1789. Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation began the unbroken yearly holiday.
No. 5

The giant balloons in the Macy’s parade were invented by a puppeteer.

Truth. Tony Sarg designed the first balloons for 1927. It is the story of Balloons Over Broadway.
No. 6

Thanksgiving has always been the fourth Thursday in November.

Turkey. Lincoln chose the last Thursday. Roosevelt moved it a week earlier in 1939 (“Franksgiving”), and Congress fixed the fourth Thursday in 1941.
No. 7

Canada’s Thanksgiving falls in October.

Truth. It is the second Monday of October. Louise Penny’s Still Life opens on that weekend in Three Pines.
No. 8

Cranberry sauce was on the table in 1621.

Turkey, almost certainly. Cranberries grew wild, but the colonists had little or no sugar to make a sauce.

Check a ticket to start.

Reading Thanksgiving with the Wampanoag in mind

The school-play version of the first Thanksgiving leaves a lot out. The Wampanoag had lived on that coast for thousands of years, and the alliance with Plymouth ended in war within two generations. Many Native families mark the day with a feast, some with mourning, and many with both. The books on our Native voices shelf tell the story from their side. For children, start with Keepunumuk, which was made by Wampanoag authors and illustrators.

Questions at the ticket office

Thanksgiving books: FAQ

What are the best Thanksgiving books for adults?

For a novel actually set at Thanksgiving, start with So Far Gone by Jess Walter, The Ice Storm by Rick Moody or Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler. For something short, Truman Capote’s The Thanksgiving Visitor takes under an hour.

Which novels take place on Thanksgiving?

The Ice Storm (Thanksgiving weekend 1973), The Ghost at the Table by Suzanne Berne, Thanksgiving Night by Richard Bausch and Jess Walter’s So Far Gone all turn on the holiday.

What are good Thanksgiving books for kids?

Keepunumuk, Balloons Over Broadway, Thank You, Omu! and Turkey Trouble are our favourites for young readers. Older kids can try Thanksgiving on Thursday from the Magic Tree House series.

What should I read about the real history of Thanksgiving?

This Land Is Their Land by David J. Silverman tells the Wampanoag side. Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick follows the colony to King Philip’s War.

What is a good Thanksgiving book club pick?

So Far Gone and The Most Fun We Ever Had both give a group plenty to argue about, which is very much in the Thanksgiving spirit. Our table-talk cards work for any book.

Are there cozy Thanksgiving mysteries?

Yes. Leslie Meier’s Turkey Trot Murder is set around the holiday, and Mia P. Manansala’s Tita Rosie’s Kitchen mysteries are full of food and family.

When is Thanksgiving 2026?

Thursday 26 November 2026 in the United States. Canadian Thanksgiving was Monday 12 October 2026.

What can I read in one sitting over the long weekend?

The Thanksgiving Visitor, Alcott’s An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving, Oliver Sacks’s Gratitude and Robin Wall Kimmerer’s The Serviceberry are all short enough to finish between dinner and dessert.
