Small-Town Horror Books26 novels where everybody knows

These are the small town horror books we would hand to anyone, from an 1820 schoolmaster's ride through a haunted valley to Derry and the Losers Club. Main streets, church steeples and neighbours who know exactly what happened.

Above all, small-town horror is where the genre grew up. A carnival arrives at three in the morning, two strangers buy the derelict house on the hill and the whole town learns to look away. No writer has mapped those streets more thoroughly than Stephen King, who has three of the six picks here.

For each pick, we give the street where it is set, a rating for how dark the town's secret is and a short reason to read it. After that, you will find the rest of our small-town shelf in order of publication year, newest first.
