Book Summary: Nocturnal Fantasies by Joy Moitra

Poems express all our emotions beautifully. Hidden inside words are feelings we shelter in the deepest corners of our hearts. We think about these feelings and go back in time and space to nurture and fondle them. Words and phrases take shape, and, slowly, bit by bit, poems are formed. We all have poems within us; some of us write them, some don’t. I am sure each one of you will find, in this book, at least one poem that may be the song of your life. We all love to sing – come let’s do that together!

Book Review: Nocturnal Fantasies by Joy Moitra

‘’Nocturnal’’ is a word that evokes solemnity, tranquillity, the night with its silent demons staring at us, reprimanding us, possibly tempting us. Darkness and night have the unique ability to make us discover thoughts we never knew we’ve nurtured all along. Loneliness, loss, love, change. As the night comes, our mind relaxes, the body is ready to lose itself, arms are laid down, tongues are loosed, and hearts are opened. When we are alone during the night, our thoughts, our desire and fantasies take over our mind.

For me, poetry is the art of translating the experience of our souls in a language not adequate to describe the experience – yet we try, combining words in beautiful and unexpected ways so that we actually discover bits of ourselves that have remained hidden until now. Here, In Nocturnal Fantasies, the mood was very intriguing and engrossing. Every poem was meant to make you feel things. It comes from everyday experience and the inspirations just kept on coming.

Nocturnal Fantasies by Joy Moitra takes the reader on a journey of blossoming love, hope, the ups and downs of committing to one another, and finding oneself wrapped in loneliness. These poems traverse the whole spectrum of human emotion, giving us insight of how they evolve, change, and overlap over time. The poems are heartfelt, raw and straightforward. There were a few poems that capture the essence of an ethereal, melancholic nocturne. Joy Moitra’s ability to say so much in only a few words is amazing. Each poem sparks a thought, a memory and takes you on your own journey.

‘Nocturnal Fantasies’ is beautifully written, lyrically expressive on a myriad of topics. There is no one theme except perhaps self-reflection. The author jumps around between love and loss, hope and self empowerment with focus on night, dreams and fantasies. There is a wildness to it that is so connectable. Some of the poems are whimsical and light and some are deal with heavier emotions. The way Joy Moitra weaves his words together to create meaning behind his poems is beautiful.

The short length of the book and seeming simplicity is belied by the incredible amount of attention given to it. For it explores far more than a simple themes. The use of dazzling imagination, vivid emotional resonance, and a breath-taking sense of movement, explores several different subjects, including – poetic creativity, self-realization and many other feelings from the depths of our heart. If one is so inclined, one can even connect this creative interpretations to suggest that poet’s ultimate goal was to relate ecstatic frenzy – how we identify and understand the frenzy ultimately reveals our own fantasy and interest. I highly recommend this collection to anyone who needs comfort or inspiration, and for all who loves really good poetry.
