Based on the true but fictionalized story of Pino Lella, Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan is set in Milan, Italy, and its countryside during the final two years of the Second World War.

Told through the eyes of multiple characters, Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste NG is a slow burn read with fluid changes of POV. While one of the main events occurs in the first chapter, it isn't until the end that one can fully understand the implications of "the little fires everywhere."

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys was an excellent book. It's fast-paced, thoroughly-researched, basically it encompasses all the best things about historical fiction.
